Supporting Nord Stream 2
This week, SafeLane’s international marine team received a glowing testimonial for their critical work in support of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project in the Baltic.
EOD experts in the AllSeas team
SafeLane has explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) experts embedded with the AllSeas team on board the Solitaire, which is the largest pipe laying vessel in the world.
The Nord Stream 2 pipeline will transport natural gas to the European Union to enhance security of supply, to support climate goals and strengthen the internal energy market.
She’s been laying pipes through (or close to) designated chemical warfare munitions dump sites within the Baltic Sea.
As a result, SafeLane has embedded marine explosive ordnance (EO) and chemical munitions experts on board to support the Solitaire and her crew with their critical operations.
SafeLane's EO and chemical munitions experts, Kris and Neil
EOD experts Kris Cunningham and Neil Hobbs have been providing the following: -
- The preparation of briefing material and procedures for working in the HELCOM area, where the equipment used for pipelaying may come into contact with chemical warfare agents.
- On-site briefings and training for personnel to help them identify chemically contaminated material.
- Training in the use of HELCOM PPE equipment.
- Implementation of investigation procedures in order to determine if equipment has become contaminated with chemical warfare agents.
- Execution of response procedures should chemical agents be detected.
A testimnonial from Solitaire
The Solitaire’s superintendent sent this testimonial in support of SafeLane’s marine team:
“I would just like to take the opportunity, to let you know what a great professional job your guys did on their recent time on-board the Solitaire. We have all been very impressed at the way the conducted themselves, and I have had nothing but positive feedback from my crew. They will be very welcome back on board and if you can pass on my thoughts to them both it would be appreciated.”
SafeLane’s marine capacity operates globally, fully managing the risks posed by unexploded ordnance, including chemical munitions. It supports clients to ensure any threat is understood and appropriately managed – thus protecting the marine environment, all personnel and the positive commercial outcome of client projects.
For ship lovers out there – here’s some background information about the Solitaire. She is laying pipe for the realisation of Nord Stream 2 and is a self-propelled deep-sea pipe laying ship. She measures 300 metres long, weighs 96,000 tonnes, and when fully operational has a crew of 420. Her pipe carrying capacity is 22,000 tonnes - and she has a pipe lay speed of more than 9 km a day!
