The purpose of SafeLane's marine threat assessments, (also known as a desktop studies), is to help clients understand the likelihood of encountering explosive ordnance when they are working offshore, inshore, nearshore or in intertidal zones anywhere in the world.
Multiple data sources are consulted such as domestic and foreign national archive services, hydrographic offices, www.wrecksite.eu, internet resources and written data sources.
Additional sources will be consulted depending on an assessment's requirements. Appropriate, site specific factors / activities will be considered. These include:
- route location
- seabed conditions
- proposed scope of works
- conflict history
- historical sea mining
- historic anti-shipping activity – submarine / surface warships / airforce
- naval training areas
- explosives dumping sites
- coastal firing ranges
- shore defences
- shipwrecks
- recent UXO discoveries – media reports
The potential / existing UXO risk level will be assessed, analysed and where relevant the differing levels of threat will be mapped into zones.
Clients will be able to make informed, safe and cost-effective decisions based on the information delivered in SafeLane's marine UXO threat and risk assessments.
