The 61 million meters squared of contaminated land lies mostly in dense belts across the borders with Zambia and Mozambique, however one inland minefield was also laid by the Rhodesian army.
While the Zimbabwe Mine Action Centre and its partners have made solid progress in clearing the ground, many poor rural communities continue to be at risk.
The minefields have long divided families and impeded farming. Worse, livestock and farmers have been killed and injured as they have no choice but to work contaminated land - and tragically children continue to be killed as they play in the minefields around their homes.
